The Downs School DAS vs  Bushcraft Skills
On: Wednesday, 23 Sep 2020
Venue: at Home

Today the group were learning about firelighting; the fire 'triangle', categories of fuel needed to start a fire, sources of heat and personal safety and environmental responsibility surrounding lighting fires in the woods. We collected fuel suitable for tinder, small twigs suitable for kindling and larger twigs and small branches to sustain the fire at a later date. They learned that taking time to prepare everything is one of the keys to success! As an introduction to firelighting, we practised with the flint and steel and cotton wool balls, but despite several sparks being created the cotton balls did not catch light on this first attempt. However, the technique for creating sparks was improving and practise will make perfect. We learned it is not as easy as it looks!
